Kinsol Trestle
On my way home from Victoria earlier in the week I thought I would stop in at the Kinsol Trestle near Shawnigan Lake. Kinsol Trestle is one of the largest wooden trestles in the world (125 feet high and 615 feet long). The trestle is a seven-tiered railway bridge that spans the Koksilah River at mile 51 on the abandoned Cowichan Lake extension of the Canadian National Railway, just west of Shawnigan Lake. The trestle was built in 1921 as part of the Canadian National Railway service to Lake Cowichan and also serviced the King Solomon Copper Mines. The rail line was abandoned by the Canadian National Railway in 1979 and the trestle has fallen into disrepair, a fire has damaged the middle of the trestle deck. Luckily it looks like the trestle is going to be restored to its former glory if every thing goes to plan. You can find directions to the trestle on the Kinsol trestle website. It was pretty easy to find and was a pleasant walk to the trestle that only took about 10 minutes.
Here is a picture from 1950 of the trestle while still in use, image is by Dave Whitehead.
Now for a few of my pictures.

This picture shows the damage to the center of the trestle.
Canon 5D Mark II
It seems that Canon is releasing another 5D, it seems that it shows up in the Capture One beta 4 software as found by a user at fredmiranda.com. I am curious to see what the specs are on this is as I know a lot of people love the current 5D. Hopefully there will be more details soon other than just a name.

The strange light
I was out taking pictures today down in Victoria and I was heading back. While I was just starting to head back the heavens decided to open. It started pouring rain very hard, but then the sun came out at the same time. I happened to look back to see one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. The combination of sun and clouds made for an amazing light I have never seen before and doubt I will see for a long time if ever. The light was a yellow/brown hue that looked exactly like a sepia toned picture. I assure you that the following images were not converted to sepia, I did some slight contrast and exposure adjustments and that is it. The “noise” you see in the images is actually the rain, it was raining so hard that it degraded the picture quality some.

Photography Phriday: Shaun Santa Cruz

Shaun Santa Cruz is a photographer that I have kept tabs on over the years. He has some really stunning landscape and nature photography of the great outdoors. He does not seem to be taking as many pictures as he used to but you still have to go check out his site. Make sure to look in the landscape and nature galleries.
