After enjoying a relaxing time in the hot springs I decided to explore some of the trails near the town of Jasper. The trail I was on made it’s way up a steep hill with a great view of the town and surrounding mountains.

Today was my first real day in Jasper and I decided to make my way up Maligne Valley stopping off at a few places along the way. The first stop was the stunning Medicine lake, one of the larger lakes that is drained by a series of underground rivers.

After Exploring the area around the lake for awhile it was time to move on the the famous Maligne Lake, by the time the weather had clouded over a bit but it was still a beautiful lake even though it was busy.

On the way back I saw some Hoary Marmots and stopped to get some pictures, these where quite tame and didn’t seem to even notice me.

The last stop before getting back to camp was the Maligne canyon which I had visited before.

I was woken up early by the lovely sound of heavy rain on my tent, in a brief pause in the rain I packed up camp and started on my way towards Jasper. On my way out of Wells Gray I did stop at a few places. One of those was a viewpoint overlooking the valley that the road follows.

A look at one of the valleys steep walls

My next stop was at another well know waterfall, Spahats Falls which has carved into the volcanic rock before it tumbles off a cliff into a raging creek.

The rest of the day was a pretty uneventful drive up to Jasper and then setting up camp.

The day started out as a dull overcast day with the odd promise of sun that never really seemed to come true. I spent much of the day hiking with little success in the photo department but after sitting out the days rain storm I made my way of to Baileys Chute which is named after one of the engineers that was responsible for putting the road in, he unfortunately died down stream in a boating accident.Near the chute there are a number of small waterfalls (rapids?) which where very formidable looking.

This was my first real day at Wells Gray park and although it was warm out the weather was a mixed bag of rain and sunshine which was not ideal.

I decided to go and check out the most well know waterfall in the park, Helmcken Falls which tumbles 141 m (463 ft). This is one of the highest waterfalls in Canada and was spectacular to see.

My next stop was Ray farm, this was the site of the only homestead in the park and was donated when the owners passed away about 50 years ago. Since then nature is slowly returning the site to its natural site but most of the original buildings are still standing.

After packing up at Lac le Juene it was time to move on to the next location, Wells Gray Provincial park about 160km North of Kamloops. I had never been to this park but had heard it was rugged and remote. Driving into the campground which is about 70km from the tiny town of Clearwater you get the feeling that you are really heading into the wilderness. After about 30km the paved road turns into a twisting dirt road that often skirts the edges of steep gullies and canyons you end up at Clearwater lake which has two campgrounds next to each other. The area is littered with streams and rivers which make this one of the best places to see some truly spectacular waterfalls and rivers.

I spent three nights at Wells Gray so the next few days will be the further exploration of the park which was simply stunning if you overlook the bugs.

I have finally got a number of photos edited and I should be posting more each day.

I started my journey in Victoria and made my way toward Lac le Jeune to spend my first night. I have spent a few nights here before and have always been impressed with the wildlife that you are able to spot here specially birds. This time did not disappoint as I found a number of bird nests and was able get some great shots.

I have been spending a fair bit of time out at Albert Head Lagoon since I found a family of killdeers out there. I have been going back on a semi regular basis and little seems to have changed. Was out there again tonight and instead of just taking more shots of the killdeers I also did a few landscapes.

I also did take a few of the killdeers as well.

There has also been a family of ducks who are growing up fast, last time I saw them they where still little ducklings, mum is still keeping a lookout for them but they are much bigger now.
