Sandcut Beach Under Threat

Sandcut beach on the south-west of Vancouver Island has become one of my favourite beaches since discovering it last year after moving to Victoria. This is one of the most beautiful locations I have ever visited. I have made a number of trips to this beach in the past little while and hope to be able to continue to do this. Unfortunately the current owners of this property, Western Forest Products is looking to sell off 5,700 hectares along the Juan de Fuca straight near Jordan River which includes many of the popular surfing beaches as well as Sandcut beach. Right now local governments and private parties such as UBC and the land conservancy (TLC) are in negotiations to prevent the privatization and development of at least the waterfront portions of this land if not all of it. I can only hope that some kind of agreement is reached so not only Sandcut beach can be saved but this whole area which is simply stunning.

Sandcut Beach Revisited

I first went to Sandcut Beach last year around the same time of year and have been wanting to go back ever since. This is an very beautiful location that does not get much traffic which makes it perfect to relax or in my case get some nice photos without any distractions.

I arrived to the beach shortly after sunrise and was welcomed by a tantalizing golden light that only lasted a few minutes.

After taking in the lovely sunrise I continued down to the twin falls that empty onto the beach from Sandcut Creek. When I was last here there was a pretty substantial channel through the sand and gravel that lead to the ocean but this has since disappeared. The falls now just dissipate into the porous gravel beach.

Surfs up!

This weekend we had a short break in the usual west coast winter rain in place for some very welcome sunshine. I decided to make a trip out past Sooke and explore the area around Jordan River. Just outside of Jordan River I decided to go and investigate a nice looking beach and I ran into a small group of surfers enjoying the rare sunny day.

Port Renfrew & Botanical Beach

This past weekend I decided to make the drive up to Port Renfrew and while I was there check out Botanical beach.  I made it up to Port Renfrew and it was very foggy, at times three was less than 50 meters of viability.  My plans for finding some birds at Pachena bay where dampened by the fog a lots of people fishing for pink salmon so I decided to head down to Botanical beach.

Since it was high tide and was very foggy I didn’t really get any tide pool shots or and landscapes of the beach but I did manage to get some of the lush temperate coastal rain forest.  This old growth rain forest is simply stunning and a must see for anyone.

After spending most of the day in Port Renfrew it was time to head back to Victoria. On the way back I made a few stops. My first stop was at one of the many rivers that cross the road.

Once again on the road I made  another stop at Jordan river as the sun decided to to come out so I enjoyed the ocean view for awhile before making the final leg of the trip home.

Overall it was a fantastic day trip trip even if the weather was not the best you have to make the best out of it.

Sandcut Beach

A few weeks ago I went out to Sandcut beach, I have never been here before but had driven past it quite a few times. Located between French Beach and Jordan River it is accessed by a short hike though old growth forest to a relatively unknown beach. The beach was amazing, it has a water fall that splits into 2 as it flows from a sandstone cliff to the beach bellow. I was lucky to have some amazing weather for mid January.
